Hardcover. Condition: NF. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Colour Art Portrait frontis, Colour Plate with Company Flag and Funnel Markings, B/Wphotos throughout, Map, Tables (illustrator). 1st. Today the beautifully maintained, blue hulled ships, with their distinctive star insignia to the funnel.of the Maersk line are a colourful addition to merchant shipping in ports throught the maritime world. Late in 1904 A P Moller purchased his first ship, a small British steamer the Ada, which was re-named Svendborg after her Danish port of registration and which was the also the initial company name. Subsequently, with a few exceptions, all company ships carried the Maersk suffix. By 1910 the fleet had grown to three ships but at the outbreak of WW! in 1914 it numbered 11 ships, 20 in 1916 but down to 12 by 1919. By 1930 the fleet stood at 40 ships and 45 when war broke out again in 1939 --- reduced to 21 by 1945. However, another 20 ships, including tankers, were operated by associated companies. Post WWII the fleet increased rapidly reaching 50 by 1950 and 88 by 1965, making Maersk one of the major international shipping companies, a position maintained today. The comany's story is told in a comprehensive manner by the author, encompassing its operational development and wider interests, including that of the extended Moller family from its founde, A P Moller. Although Denmark was among the countries occupied by Germany in WWII the Maersk ships served the Allied cause, incurring heavy losse to the fleet, repeating the experiences of WWI. The company was strong, surviving both world wars, the Great Depression and later difficult times for world shipping. "With Constant Care" was published as a private edition and was "not subject to public sale." This copy's former owner was a leader in New Zealand agriculture who was closely associated with the country's overseas trade. First edition of 1988, 325 pages including five appendices (one a comprehensive Fleet List) and index. Light blue (company colour) hard covers are NF with white spine titles and star decoration lower front corner, former owner's small label top right front pastedown, no inscriptions, text block also NF. Colour pictorial seascape DJ is VG+ with faint surface wear to corners/spine extremities. A heavy book, approaching 1kg unpacked, could require additional postasge for overseas delivery.
