The NC-1 and NC-3 landed at sea after becoming lost in a storm. The NC-1 was destroyed by heavy seas and sank, but the crew was rescued. The NC-3 sailed to its destination. The NC-4 made it and became the first aircraft to fly across the Atlantic. The book was written by three Naval aviators who participated in the mission. Cdr. Westervelt was in charge of the development, design and construction of the aircraft and planning of the mission. Cdr. Richardson designed the hull of the flying boats and was also one the of pilots of the NC-3. Lt. Cdr. Read was the commander and navigator of the NC-4 that completed the mission. Illustrated with photographs and line drawings. 318 pages. The gilt titles on the spine are faded. Foxing to end papers. Title page is yellowed. Shelf wear to boards. Corners bumped.
