Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Originally published in Australia, The Grass Library is a philosophical and poetic journey by one of Australia's most skilled, unusual and versatile writers (Sydney Morning Herald). Both a memoir and an elegy for animal rights, The Grass Library portrays the author's relationship with his dog, four sheep, and myriad other animals in the home he shares with his partner in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales. This collection of essays--with its lyrical language, its honesty and vulnerability, its charm and wit--will delight and inspire all animal lovers, and especially those who rescue animals.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. When I was in my early forties, I began writing a regular column for the newspaper sent to Episcopalians in the diocese of Chicago. In Faithwalk, I tried to describe my struggles as a believing Christian set against my background as a lawyer, single parent, son of aging parents, and sinner. This venture in self-analysis continued a process of trying to square my life with God's call to a Christian begun many years earlier, but the writing was, I believe, an insight into how God works in all lives. Though written from a Christian perspective, these essays should appeal to anyone struggling with his or her faith in a world that seems spinning out of control. And I believe that God uses nonbelievers as a fulcrum to test our own belief. Now in my early sixties, after the columns collected dust, I reread them, and I think they stand the test of time. So, I have decided to publish them in a book, adding a bit of commentary to provide the context. They have been arranged, not in the order they were written, but rather according to topic, topics suggested by the biblical narrative by which the Creator of the universe loved us so much that he sent his only Son to die for us. I hope you enjoy them.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. How university presidents lead is an extremely important topic, for both the welfare of universities and for society and for society as a whole. This book is based on papers presented at Wake Forest University, where three forums co-sponsored by the Center for Creative Leadership were held to address the questions of leadership in American universities. This book is structured around nine of the papers that were presented. Each paper was authored by a university president; each discusses a specific issue that the president faced during his or her tenure; each concludes with lessons learned. Three other presidents were asked to reflect on the essays based on their own experiences. The outstanding contributors to this book share their experiences about the kind of leadership situations senior administrators face and the moral decisions they are called upon to make. Among them are: Mary Sue Coleman, President, University of Michigan; Molly Corbet Broad, President, University of North Carolina System; William Kirwan, Chancellor, University of Maryland System; Edward S. Malloy, President, University of Notre Dame; Steve Sample, President, University of Southern California; Graham B. Spanier, President, Pennsylvania State University; Larry K. Faulkner, President, University of Texas, Austin; and E. Gordon Gee, Chancellor, Vanderbilt University. The passion that these university leaders bring to their jobs and the moral imagination that their roles require were all readily apparent at the forums and are captured here. The Smith-Richardson Foundation gave Wake Forest University and the Center for Creative Leadership a grant to address the question of leadership in American universities and to run a series of three forums. Thirty-six of America's busiest and most visible university presidents swapped and shared success stories, and reflected upon the lessons they had learned on the job.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. How reliable is our intuition? How much should we depend on gut-level instinct rather than rational analysis when we play the stock market, choose a mate, hire an employee, or assess our own abilities? In this discussion, David Myers shows us that while intuition can provide us with useful, and often amazing, insights, it can also dangerously mislead us. Drawing on psychological research, Myers discusses the powers and perils of intuition when: judges and jurors determine who is telling the truth; mental health workers predict whether someone is at risk for suicide or crime; coaches, players and fans decide who has the hot hand or the hot bat; personnel directors hire new employees; and psychics claim to be clairvoyant or to have premonitions.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. "Each chapter is a gem of insight into the human experience, cut and polished to perfection by the renowned psychologist David Myers. Better than any book I can recall, this book answers questions about why we think, feel, and act as we do--but also makes us curious to learn more." --Angela Duckworth A delightful tour of the wonders of our humanity from David G. Myers, the award-winning professor and author of psychology's bestselling textbook. Over the past three decades, millions of students have learned about psychology from textbooks by David G. Myers. To create these books and to satisfy his own endless curiosity about the human mind, Myers monitors the leading journals to discover the most extraordinary developments in psychological science. How Do We Know Ourselves? is a compendium of the most wondrous verities that Myers has found, revealing thought-provoking insights into our everyday lives. His astute observations and sharp-witted wisdom enable readers to think smarter and live happier. Myers's subjects range from why we so often fear the wrong things to how simply going for a walk with someone can increase rapport and empathy. He reveals why we repeatedly mishear song lyrics and how the color of President Obama's suits aided in his decision-making. Myers also explores the powers and perils of our intuition, explaining why anything can seem obvious once it happens. These forty essays offer fresh insight into our sometimes bewildering but ever-fascinating lives. Myers is engaging and intellectually provocative, and he brings a wealth of knowledge from more than fifty years of teaching and writing about psychology to this lively and informative collection. He inspires us to ponder timeless questions, including what might be the most intriguing one of all: How do we know ourselves.…
