It is an adventure whose origins are lost in the mists of time when "the kitchen" was simply the gesture of lighting a fire. The first hearth, a ring of loose stones, was made in prehistoric days. Later came the spit described in the myths of Homer's ancient Greece and the first written records of pots and pans from Babylonia. Gradually the kitchen became a recognized place in the home and absolved a more distinct function. In Pompeii it was important enough to be put near the altar of the family gods. It became the place where food was not only cooked but also preserved and stored. But in the homes of the poor the hearth was the only source of heat and was the natural centre of the home. Eating habits changed faster. From the interminable banquets of Roman times to the triumphal ostentation of the Renaissance, to the more moderate tables customary from the mid-eighteenth century, cooking and serving food have varied enormously. But it was only in the early years of the 20th century that German and Italian Rationalism finally theorized on the need for a functional kitchen. The first factory began producing modular systems in Italy in the sixties. In that period Rino Snaidero began industrial production of kitchen furniture. Today we live in homes where all our needs are catered for. Everybody cooks and we can each choose our own kitchen. The height of evolution of the kitchen means that each one of us can find the perfect answer to our expectations. The kitchen is not a painting, it is a living place.
