The celebrated history of the Valois Dukes of Burgundy (Philip the Bold, John the Fearless, Philip the Good, Charles the Bold) by Baron Prosper de Barante (1782-1866), Pair de France and member of the Académie française ? one of the masterpieces of French Romantic historiography. Flaubert called it "a chef-d'?uvre of history and literature." This Belgian edition, enriched with scholarly notes by Louis-Prosper Gachard, Archivist-General of the Kingdom of Belgium and leading authority on medieval Flemish archives, is the most complete available text. EXCEPTIONAL PROVENANCE: Both volumes bear the Belgian Royal Arms in gilt on the front boards ? the Lion of Belgium under royal crown with the motto "L'Union fait la Force" ? indicating ownership by a Belgian royal or state institution. Crowned gilt monogram on spines. BINDING: Full brown leather, spines with raised bands, gilt ruling and royal crowned monogram in gilt on spines. Uniform period binding of high quality.
