The first 17pp. print Gaifer's letter; pp.18-24 print a poem by the late Rev. Dr. Samuel Stennett, "The Bird of Paradise," extracted from the Baptist Register, published in England by Rev. Dr. Rippon. According to catalogue records… at AAS, this letter was first published in London in 1757, with the title "The Christian Indeed," and is attributed to John Edwards in the Dictionary of national biography: "Perhaps [Edwards] most remarkable success came with the pubication of 'The Christian Indeed' in 1757. Its seventh edition was published in London in 1775 under the title 'The Conversion of a Mehometan to the Christian Religion,' which became a hugely successful evangelical tract in North America, reaching at least seven editions between 1797 and 1817." The copy here, which has no imprint information, has 24 numbered pages as do copies at AAS printed in Concord, NH in 1797, Greenwich, MA in 1807.
