Edition not stated but likely a first edition. Gerhard Gaiser (1908-1976) was born in Oberroexingen, Germany. He was an influential figure in postwar German literature as well as art history. He initially pursued a career in art, earning his doctorate in 1934 with a dissertation on Spanish Baroque and Renaissance sculpture. However, his path shifted dramatically during World War II when he served as a fighter pilot and was eventually captured by British forces. After the war, Gaiser faced difficulties in his painting career and turned to writing, producing poetry and narratives that explored the struggles of soldiers returning to civilian life. "The Last Squadron" is about a German fighter group stationed on the north coast of Europe during the closing years of World War II.
