Contact seller5-star sellerSpiral_bound. 128p., find a few small sketches (part of journal entries), text reproduced from a keyboard-set ms. DISBOUND, unfortunately; left margin is perforated for a comb-style spine but the comb is absent and the printed cover sheet has its perforations torn away. As is, the text is complete and a copyshop may be able to insert a fresh spine, fix the single loose (upper cover) leaf. FYI, we jury-rigged rubberband and removeable-tape fasteners which will please no-one but indeed can be removed without damage. Study of Child Growth and Development and Disease Patterns in Primitive Cultures. A further FYI as to contents: a "reprint" was available with a 1967 dating, this at 145p. therefore actually an expansion. We believe that the extra pagination consists simply of additional letters tacked onto the end of the "journal".…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fine. Decline and Fall of Prospect Hill: The End of a Decade of Manorial Living The Decline and Fall of Prospect Hill: The End of a Decade of Manorial Living (covering January 1 - December 31, 1989) is an incompletely edited, unpublished diary manuscript by Daniel Carleton Gajdusek, the 1976 Nobel laureate who identified kuru. It is one volume in his annual journals documenting life at Prospect Hill, the dilapidated eighteenth-century estate in Frederick, Maryland, where he housed a large surrogate family of mostly Papua New Guinean and Melanesian boys. Key facts: It follows the 1988 volume, Duodeca-Log: A Journal of Twelve Departures From and Returns to Prospect Hill, and precedes the 1990 volume, Year of Reentrenchment in a Wonderland of Infectious Amyloids. The manuscript was held in the personal collection of Michael Alpers in Fremantle, Australia, and is cited in scholarship on Gajdusek's household (e.g., Family Man in Oceania, 2007, and Carleton's Kids in The Journal of Pacific History, 2009). This Journal is in fine condition and has no damage, wear or blemishes. See photos.…

Contact seller5-star sellerPaperback. 207p., illustrated with just two tiny hand-sketched line maps, text reproduced from keyboard-set manuscript, copyshop-bound in 11x8.5 inch printed wraps with a black plastic comb spine. The spine is kaput, squashed beyond resetting, its ugly splayed teeth confined by clumsily-applied fiber tape - we should have disbound it and inserted a few strings as a temporary. But we didn't. A little hard to handle as is; clean and unmarked within, and definitely has no loss of leaves. Price reflects the condition. Study of Child Growth and Development and Disease Patterns in Primitive Cultures. Author relaxes with European classics; one time it was with Faulkner's As I Lay Dying. This expedition he has just finished Candide is now (evenings only) enjoying Proust's Within a Budding Grove.…

Stumbling Along the Tortuous Road to Unanticipated Nobility: Melanesian, Indonesian, and Malaysian Expedition, November 16, 1975 - December 31, 1976 is one of the personal expedition journals written by Dr. Daniel Carleton Gajdusek, the American physician and 1976 Nobel laureate who identified kuru as an infectious disease. It chronicles his fieldwork in Melanesia, Indonesia, and Malaysia during the period just after he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (hence the " unanticipated nobility " in the title), and is part of a long series of such journals spanning his research career from 1955 to 1996.
