Thieme-Becker, S. 39 (s.v. Caldara). - Alle Blätter wohl an drei Seiten beschnitten, fleckig, Gbrsp., einige Bleistift-Markierungen. - Polidoro, (um 1500 - 1543), war vorallem bekannt für seine heute zum gr. Teil verlorenen Sgrafitto-Arbeiten (monochrome Wandgestaltungen) mit antiker Thematik. Durch Stiche wurden diese überliefert, und bilden für die Entwicklung der italienischen Kunst eine bedeutende Rolle. Eines seiner bedeutensten Werke ist die architektonische Gestaltung der Fassade des Palazzo Milesi in der Via della Maschera d'oro (Rom): das erste Stockwerk schmücken Szenen aus der Geschichte der Niobe (hier dargestellt), darüber sind zwischen den Fenstern berühmte Männer der Antike zu sehen; unter den Fenstern des 2. Stockes sind sechs mythologische Szenen abwechselnd mit Szenen der röm. Geschichte zu sehen sowie Staffage. Für zwei Dinge war er bei Zeigenossen besonders berühmt: sein "Chiaroscuro" und seine Kenntnisse der Antike. - Die Abbildung zeigt Ausschnitte zweier Blätter.
