Eine grosse Bedeutung für die Ethnologie haben seine von 1832 bis 1834 in Nordamerika gezeichneten und aquarellierten Indianer- und Landschaftsbilder, die sein Auftraggeber Prinz Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied ab 1839 in dem Werk Reise in das innere Nord-America in den Jahren 1832 bis 1834 als kolorierte Aquatinten veröffentlichte. Sie zeigen den Wilden Westen zwar subjektiv, doch realitätsnah. Heute gehören Bodmers Bilder und die Reisebeschreibung von Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied zu den wichtigsten Dokumenten über die untergegangenen Indianerkulturen in den Great Plains am Missouri River. Die Druckplatten sowie 386 Zeichnungen und Aquarelle befinden sich zusammen mit dem schriftlichen Nachlass von Prinz Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied in dem amerikanischen Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha (Nebraska).
