viii, 418 [24] pp. First edition. Octavo. Rebound with green cloth boards and new end papers. Edges untrimmed and somewhat dust soiled. Illustrated with ten maps. Includes advertising for additional titles from the publisher at the rear. Overall, a very good copy of an interesting title. For the first time in human history, some Victorians had the capacity and the financial ability to travel for both scientific pursuits and for pleasure. Stories of adventure during an age of science and exploration were much appreciated, even if the readers weren't planning a trip to Mount Athos or spending nine weeks in Canada themselves. This anthology, one of a three volume series, was edited by writer and traveler Francis Galton (who was cousin to another famous Victorian traveller, Charles Darwin). It contains eleven vignettes from various authors with their impressions of Russia, Schamyl, Auvergne and more. Contributors to this volume included Captain Richard Collinson (explorer of the North West Passage) on time spent in Canada, Reverend Charles Young visiting the Amazon and Rio Madeira and naturalist Philip Lutley Sclater's impressions of Spain. The trips were often related to geological and other scientific pursuits, but the aspects of encountering the unexpected, of being a guest in someone else's country and encountering a "dry, bare, ugly" country on a naturalist expedition are decidedly familiar to anyone has ever experienced the ups and downs of a contemporary vacation. This book was previously owned by Lieutenant Commander Andrew David of the Royal Navy with his book plate on the front free end paper.

Galton, the cousin of Charles Darwin and the originator of eugenic studies, whose seminal work, Finger Prints (London, 1892), led to the adoption of a entirely new system of criminal identification, was interested in tourism and vacations. His earlier work, The Art of Travel; or, Shifts and Contrivances in Wild Countries (1859) dealt with how to travel efficiently and safely, went through at least five editions over the next twenty years. In the present book, Galton edits 13 travel accounts including "The Allelein-Horn," by Leslie Stephen (Virginia Woolf's father), his own "Visit to North Spain," and H. F. Tozer's account of his visit to Norway. Several others deal with mountaineering, Naples and Gibraltar, Croatia and Hungary, and Peru. In his Preface Galton hopes that this book becomes a series of annual volumes: in fact, two others were published in subsequent years.
