Scattered moisture stains with tide marks, though there is no sticking of the leaves. Penciled name and address on the blank front free end leaf of Volume II. Jackets with chips and wear a long edges, as well as some moisture stains. Both volumes remains tight and contents are otherwise generally clean. All text and images remain clear.

A very detailed pre-war guide to Japan with much of the material adapted from the author's writings for the Japanese Government Railways. Unusually bound with a mainly bare outer spine and bound with string. Written on very thin paper but each page has been deliberately double bound. There is a little creasing and the odd mark but overall VG. Text is in English.

NOTE: herein are two different paper types, white and brown (suggesting that the brown paper may have been surplus from the 1937 editioin). Here are descriptions of many of the custom, manners, ceremonies, festivals, arts and crafts of the Japanese besides numerous other subjects. 355 .illustrations. NOTE: this work first appeared in 1934, and through 1937, and calling this 1946 appearnce its 5th printing; but, its compiler, Mr. Yamaguchi, the manager of the Fujiya Hotel, refers to this as the second edition. How much was it revised for the post-war tourist trade?

Bound in silk covered card stock covers with side sewn binding and encased in the publisher's folding cloth covered case with bone clasps and paper title label to the closed side. Solid clean copy illustrated throughout with b&w drawings, photos and graphics. The folding case is blanched and faded to the closed "spine" edge and a little shelf soiled to sides, with trace damp evidence to top edges. Book is VG or better and case G++ or better.
