XX [From the inner flaps] How and why did the Democrats change from a well-unified national party in the 1930s to a disjunctive sectional party in the 1940s? The major reason for this change, says the author of this interesting and relevant book, was the Roosevelt coalition of northern workers, intellectuals, and Negroes. To retain the support of this coalition, the Roosevelt - and later Truman - administration would have to satisfy its demands. Yet many of these demands, especially on civil rights, strongly conflicted with southern reasons for party allegiance and promoted friction between the New Deal liberals and the Dixie conservatives. This situation eventually led to the 1948 Dixiecrat revolt and the formation of the short-lived States' Rights party. The author traces this growing sense of alienation and the withdrawal, on both the federal and state levels, and suggests that the policies of Roosevelt and Truman were a result of profound divisions within the Democratic party. He examines developments in Congress and the White House, and also in the labor unions, rights organizations, and regional associations. Mr. Garson puts the whole question of southern dissidence into a wide context not only by describing representative southern opinion and the nuances of state politics, but also by evaluating the substance of this criticism. Finally, he argues that the Dixiecrat revolt was not merely a political flash in the pan but an important new departure in American politics which had significant and long-reaching consequences. XX ROBERT A. GARSON is Lecturer in American Studies at the University of Keele in Staffordshire, England. A native of London, he received his B.A. degree at the University of Sussex and his Ph.D. degree at the University of London. XX [This book] fills in a significant gap in the existing literature of sectional divisions in the Democratic party. Garson's research cannot be faulted. It is exhaustive. He touches on every conceivable issue and event pertinent to his subject (GEORGE B. TINDALL).
