The Hansa was not above force, bribery, even war. In its heyday, the Hansa had such might and financial power that it could dictate terms to kings and emperors. Nor was the Hansa slow to punish member merchants whose goods, by not meeting the League's high standards, could bring the League into disrepute. In Nash's account, it becomes clear that the story of the Hansa is a mixed one: on the one hand, the League was harsh and autocratic; on the other, it spread trade, prosperity, and culture in a brutal age.
