Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In spite of society's wish to protect and insulate children from death, the experience of loss is unavoidable and there is surprisingly little guidance on how to help children cope with grief and bereavement. Never Too Young to Know: Death in Children's Lives is the first book to bring together diverse fields of study, offering a practical as well as multifaceted theoretical approach to how children cope with death. Using stories of children's own experiences supported by data from a large research study, Silverman explains the wide range of effects of loss upon children and the challenges they face as they grieve. Silverman presents grief as a normal part of the life cycle which results not only in pain and sadness but also in change and growth. She further explains that children can and do cope effectively with loss and the changes it brings as long as they are taught to understand that death is a part of life and that they will be included appropriately in the family drama. Never Too Young To Know: Death in Children's Lives is divided into three parts. The first section includes an overview and theoretical framework that examines the social, historical, developmental, and familial forces that frame and focus childrens lives as they experience loss. The second section offers a detailed analysis of how children experience mourning different types of death including the death of siblings, parents, and friends, and death due to illness, suicide, accidents, and violence. The final section includes an accessible guide to helping children cope with grief, emphasizing the importance and the necessity of social support as children learn to adapt to their new lives. Never Too Young To Know: Death in Children's Lives is not only ideal for advanced undergraduate and graduate students learning about children but it is also useful for courses on death and dying and the family. It is also an invaluable book for mental health practitioners, clergy, school teachers, nurses, pediatricians, as well as the general reader interested in learning how to deal with death in children's lives. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

"First published in 1987 by Aurora Art Publishers, Leningrad / This edition published in 1990 by Portland House. . . ." Small red dot to top page edges; likely a remainder mark. Director General Piotrovsky mentions parts of the collection being brought back from safe storage in the Urals after the Russians broke the German siege of Leningrad in 1944, though curiously there's no mention of any loot being brought EAST from Germany in 1945. (Schliemann's gold from Troy went to the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, of course.) Irina Novosselskaya does acknowledge that "A significant enlargement of the Hermitage's stocks took place after the October Revolution of 1917 with the transfer to the museum of nationalized" (stolen) "collections of paintings, graphics, and applied arts" from various other palaces and museums, including "the Stieglitz School of Art and Industrial Design." Examples shown here of the Leningrad/St. Petersburg museum's holdings of paintings by Da Vinci, Rembrandt van Rijn, Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, Frans Hals, Rubens, Van Dyck, Gainsborough, Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse, etc., plus prehistoric archaeological finds, 17th and 18th Century coins and medals, and so on. 392 pp., reduced from $30.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Retired library book with usual library markings. Solid copy. Large color folded map laid in. Illustrated with numerous photographs INTRODUCTION HIS Handbook of Mexico has been prepared to meet the great demand which is made upon the Pan American Union for comprehensive and specific data regarding Mexico, it endeavors to give those facts concerning geography, configuration, climate, agriculture, mineral and timber resources, history, public institutions, army and navy, exports and imports, railways, posts and telegraphs, finance, political divisions, cities, people, and other important features which are desired by persons intending to study Mexico, travel within its limits, make investments, or engage in export and import trade between it and other countries. While every effort is taken to secure accuracy, the Pan American Union must not be held responsible for errors which may have crept in through mistakes appearing in the original sources of information. These are believed to be very few, but some are necessarily unavoidable in a review of this extent and character. The map of Mexico, while not an official publication of either the Pan American Union or the Mexican Government, and hence not one for which they are responsible, is found practical and useful for this work. If persons seeking knowledge regarding subjects not described in this Handbook will communicate with the Pan American Union, it will endeavor to supply the desired information. Mexico is so large, and is making such progress, that it is manifestly impossible to do justice to every feature of its growth and development, but it is believed that a Handbook of this character will be welcomed by all persons interested in that remarkable country. The Director General wishes to give credit to Dr. Albert Hale and Francisco A. Godoy, of the Pan American Union staff, for their efforts in collecting and editing the data for this work. 389 pages.
