Thick 8vo. xxxi, [3], 852 pp. Full publisher's calf, red, black & gilt morocco spine labels (minor scuffing & rubbing to fore-edges, minor bumping to corners, hinges tender), still a VG copy, from the library of Ira D. Orton (1872-1952), noted Seattle attorney, who first practiced in San Francisco before the 1906 earthquake & fire, then Alaska, and finally in Seattle, WA after World War I, w/ his ownership signature on front pastedown. First edition of this rare work on Mining law which was compiled by the authors in order to provide a guide due to the lack of such specific works on the subject in the Western United States. There was such a small body of law and with the exploding mineral discoveries in Nevada, California, the American southwest, and other areas, this was intended to fill the gap. Of particular interest are the sections on French, Spanish, and Mexican mining laws as they have passed into various Territorial and Western state law codes. In addition, the authors have included sections on Mining claims on public lands, Miners right in California and the Western States and territories, Possession of mining ground in the Western States and Territories, location of mining claims, abandonment and forfeiture, Mining customs of the Western States and Territories, and much more. Most of these, including the sections on water rights, remain in force in the 21st Century.
