Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Good+. 2nd Edition. See photos for condition details: hardcover, volume 2 ONLY. Signed/inscribed on the title page: "Captain E. Willoughby Anderson of Virginia. C.S.A Cadet of West Point College, son of Captain J. Willoughby Anderson of West Point College". Cadet Anderson came from a distinguished military…family serving since colonial times. His father, Capt. James Willoughby Anderson, served in the Seminole and Mexican Wars and was killed at Churubusco. His Grandfather, Col. William Anderson, served with Decatur in the capture of the Macedonian, and others were prominent throughout the early colonization of the country. Cadet Anderson made history for being the first cadet to be called upon to make his choice between the North and the South, where he then refused to complete the Oath of Allegiance to the US Government in a ceremony that took place shortly after the attack at Ft. Sumter. His refusal ended his cadetship at West Point. He left and volunteered in the south as an officer, serving from the Peninsula Campaign through Appomattox. His name was not printed in the book, so he wrote it in himself on the title page. The book exterior shows wear to the edges and corners, with the worst being the upper corners. There's also wear to the spine tips, with the headcap missing above the gilt design. The interior binding of the text portion of the pages is good but there is some thin cracking starting at the front board. Both boards also show splitting of the exterior hinge areas at the top, roughly under an inch on each side. Remaining binding is good, no other handwriting was found in the book, nothing torn or loose. The bottom edge of the text block does have a spot of white paint on it, as shown in the photos. This is a very unique copy because of the owner's inscription. It is unknown if he had originally purchased a full set, or just wanted volume 2 because it showed his fellow cadets at his time at West Point. Signed by Other.
