Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This captivating account explores the extraordinary life and prolific career of John Sherman, one of the most influential figures in American history. It begins by detailing his humble beginnings as a canal worker but quickly progresses to chronicle his significant roles as a US Representative, Senator, and Secretary of Treasury under President Hayes. The book delves deeply into the political landscape of the time, highlighting Sherman's instrumental role in shaping the Republican Party during the turbulent era of the Civil War and Reconstruction. It thoroughly examines the complex issues of his day, including monetary policy, tariffs, and the contentious debate over sound money. With meticulous research and insightful analysis, the author presents a nuanced portrait of a steadfast statesman who dedicated his life to public service, battling against the economic disparities of his time and advocating for a more equitable society. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
