Illustrated monograph on the life and art of Georges Rouault (1871-1958), the major French Expressionist painter known for his richly colored, heavily outlined depictions of Christ, clowns, prostitutes, and judges. Text by the prominent French art critic Waldemar George and Genevieve Nouaille-Rouault, the artist's granddaughter, translated by Noel Lindsay. Traces Rouault's artistic development from his training under Gustave Moreau through his mature work, examining his signature subjects and themes with numerous color and black-and-white reproductions of his paintings, watercolors, gouaches, and lithographs.
