Hardcover. Condition: As New. When the fabled founder of Bangalore, Kempe Gowda, set out to build his dream city in the early sixteenth century, his mother gave him two instructions: Keregalam Kattu, Marangalam Nedu. Build lakes, plant trees. Gowda built a hundred lakes and lined the wide avenues of the city with leafy trees. Af…ter India gained independence, Bangalore became known as a pensioners' paradise. In the early 1980s, the city reinvented itself once again, this time as the home of some of the world's most outstanding entrepreneurs. Very rapidly, aided by the dozens of engineering schools that had sprouted in the city since Independence, Bangalore became the hub of India's information technology (IT) revolution. In the twenty-first century, the city is trying to cope with the problems that have accompanied its explosive growth, and enormous success- crumbling infrastructure, traffic jams, soaring real estate prices, corruption and chaos. Despite the challenges it faces, Bangalore continues to be one of the world's most distinctive and interesting cities. T. J. S. George walks us through both 'old' and 'new' Bangalore-from gleaming skyscrapers and lively dance studios to colonial-era bungalows marked by quaint little name-stones, from legendary eating places like Koshy's and Mavalli Tiffin Room (MTR) to shining new eateries that serve craft beer.

Soft cover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. M. S. Subbulakshmi (1916-2004), who was popularly known as MS, was one of India's greatest classical musicians. Born into a humble devadasi home, her talent and dedication to her art made her one of India's most critically acclaimed classical singers. She was the first Indian musician to…receive the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian honour, in addition to numerous other awards. Jawaharlal Nehru called her 'a Queen of Music' and Sarojini Naidu dubbed her 'the Nightingale of India'. Her fellow musicians were no less generous in their praise. Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan said she was Suswaralakshmi (the Goddess of the Perfect Note) while Kishori Amonkar said she was Aathuvansur or music's 'Eighth Note' (there are only seven notes that are basic to all musical forms). MS's genius had principally to do with her exquisite voice, her extraordinary range and her unequalled command of all the material she worked with, whether it was Carnatic music, Hindustani music or devotional music such as bhajans. In this, the definitive biography of the musician (previously published as MS: A Life in Music), award-winning biographer T. J. S. George traces her journey from her beginnings as a singer in Madurai, through her breakthrough performance at the prestigious Madras Music Academy in 1932, to her carving out a place for herself as a cultural icon. Besides exploring MS's genius, the author describes the musical and social milieu that she was part of, and the various barriers she was instrumental in breaking in the course of her journey to superstardom. He covers her stint as an actress and looks at how her career was helped by various mentors and sponsors, including C. Rajagopalachari, India's last governor general. He pays particular attention to the role of her husband, T. Sadasivam, in the creation and burnishing of MS's reputation. He examines the various controversies that surrounded her origins, and also underlines her essential humility and generosity. Told with a music connoisseur's passion and understanding, M. S. Subbulakshmi: The Definitive Biography is an enthralling portrait of a musical legend.

Soft cover. Condition: Good. This softcover is the fourth printing of this book, May 1975. Used book with typical aging (50 years old) with edge wear and a few soft corners and a small crease on the lower front cover corner. A previous owner has stamped his name on the lower corner of the half-title page and a previous bookselle…r has penciled a price in the upper corner. Inside text pages are clean and unmarked. 222 pages. From the back cover: "Lee Kuan Yew has been Prime Minister of Singapore for Twelve years and has led it to prosperity and order. Western reaction has often implied the thought 'If only there were more Third World leaders like Lee!' T.J.S. George, however, examines Lee Kuan Yew and his city state from the Asian point of view, and while acknowledging this achievements, makes an alarmingly good case for believing them to weigh light against the disadvantages of dictatorship. He chronicles the Prime Minister's rise and rule in great detail, analyses his personality, aspirations and methods, and argues from well-marshalled facts, without rhetoric, that if Lee's political philosophy had been leftist instead of favouring opportunistic capitalism, the West would have greeted his performance with dismay rather than approval." Not ex-library. Shelf: C-1.

Hardcover. Condition: New. In October 1947, two months after Independence, TJS George arrived in Bombay. He was nineteen years old, with a degree in English Literature. He sent out job applicationsto the Air Force and to the city's English-language newspapers. Only one organization cared to reply, The Free Press Journal. The edi…tor was known to hire anyone who asked for a job, but most new hires were sacked in a fortnight. George was put on the news desk as a sub-editor and eventually became an assistant editor. In Patna, as editor of The Searchlight, he was arrested by the chief minister for sedition. He spent three weeks in Hazaribagh Central Jail. In Hong Kong, he worked for the Far Eastern Economic Review as regional editor; in New York he was a writer for the United Nations population division; and, back in Hong Kong, in 1975, he founded Asiaweek. Six years later, he returned to India and settled in Bangalore. He began a column for Indian Express that ran without a break for twenty-five years, until 2022. His seventy-five years of journalism, concurrent with India's development as an independent nation, make for a unique understanding of events and personalities. Acclaimed for his widely historical, pan-Asian vision, George brings this far-flung experience to a compulsively readable new book, The Dismantling of India. It is the story of India told in 35 concise biographies, beginning with Jamsetji Tata and ending with Narendra Modi.
