The coroner says it was suicide. The case is closed. Only one man fights to reopen it. Will Applewood is sure Jamie was about to expose a scandal that would shame the British food industry. But Will is notorious for his conspiracy theories. No one listens to him. In despair he turns to his barrister Trish Maguire. Felled by food poisoning in the middle of Will's case against a huge supermarket chain, Trish is ready to believe any story about dangers lurking inside the pretty packaging of food we all eat. Even though she has more than enough to do already with the trial, an attempt to save a child at terrible risk, and plenty of emotional complications of her own, she agrees to help. Will's campaign takes her deep into the countryside, revealing a world that seems quite different from the metropolitan life she knows. But human nature doesn't change, whatever the environment. Cruelty and intimidation can flourish in the ravishing landscape just as they do in the grimmest of inner city housing estates. Moving between the two, trying to save lives and sanity, inexhaustable Trish is driven into a crusade, both personal and professional, that combines excitement, drama and agonising human tragedy. Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. SIGNED BY L.T. GETTY on title page; Clean, tight, unmarked; spine straight and uncreased; absolute minimal wear; Daphne's a typical mermaid, and at least according to her, that's a problem. She's courageous and has a beautiful singing voice, but lacks the power of an elemental, the ability to command water with the sound of her voice. Jealous of her best friend, she makes a deal with a sea witch, only to be betrayed. In place of her beautiful tail and flukes. Daphne is left beached with a pair of human legs. The spell keeping Daphne looking human will become permanent, unless Daphne can hunt down and bring the scheming Lorelei a unicorn horn before the next full moon. Unable to reach her friends and family for help, Daphne doesn't know how to walk, much less find a unicorn or know how to catch one. Even if she's successful, Daphne's still not sure she can trust Lorelei or her pint-sized kraken to keep their end of the bargain and let her return to the sea. Signed by Author(s).

The rich still live much as usual, in their big houses on higher ground, but the poor in their packed tower blocks are becoming more and more cut off while the fanatical 'Last Days' religious sect is recruiting thousands. When the rain suddenly stops, the government, eager to distract attention from a foreign war they have been waging, announces a spectacular City Gala to which the swarming characters of this visionary book flock. But her brothers, Edgar and Tom, have gone to war and Sasha has a terrible gift. She can see the future. Her premonitions show her untold horrors on the battlefields of the Somme and worse still what will happen to Edgar and Tom. Like the prophetess Cassandra, who foretold the tragedies of Troy, Sasha is trapped by power. No one will believe her. Her family have lost faith in her. She is determined to win them back, whatever the price. And it is a high one, seeing the future is a fate almost too awful to contemplate, for who wants to see the end of their own story? Stylishly written in his familiar poetic prose the story is that of a world full of threat and a child in jeopardy, but with a heroine resourceful enough to try to change the path of Fate. By any reckoning the issues at stake in the relationship between Pius XII and Hitler's Germany are key to any understanding of the origins and progress of the Second World War. This is neither a demolition job nor a piece of hagiography. Noel neither denies the fatal effect of the Vatican's concord with Hitler nor his failure to condemn Hitler's attempt to exterminate the Jews. But this is a highly original study of the exercise of political and religious power, of real politik and the extent to which politics is always the art of the possible. But beyond this, we are offered a portrait of a man in highest power and authority who was mother fixated, who was dominated by a German nun Sister Pasqualina who became the real power behind the throne and who was ultimately more liberal and anti Nazi than the Pope. It was Pasqualina herself who did most to shelter the Jewish population of Rome. There is also, in this book, the first full account of how the Pope went in for a course of rejuvenating injections to prolong his life, administered by a Swiss doctor of doubtful qualification. As time advanced Pius XII became more and more aloof and rigid in his views. In 1950 he promulgated, the Doctrine of The Assumption as infallible, the ultimate expression of the exercise of autocratic power. There is a move to canonise Pius XII, resisted tooth and nail by influential Jewish people with justice. For this reason not least Pius XII will continue to command huge attention and controversy. He will not disappear. But beyond all these red hot issues, Noel has produced an extraordinary interpretation of the exercise of power and the psychological mechanisms behind it. Scarce signed. Mailed to Herb Yellin of Lord John Press.Herb Yellin (1935-2014) was the highly respected publisher and founder of Lord John Press, considered by many to be one of the most important small presses of the 20th century. His close personal relationships with many significant writers resulted in an impressive number of unique, collectible, signed limited edition books. Working with some of modern literature's biggest names-Stephen King, Ray Bradbury, John Updike, Eudora Welty, and Joyce Carol Oates among them-and entertaining his personal fascination with Hollywood, Yellin was able to create a new realm for Lord John Press combining the two fields; several books, including The Lord John Film Festival, were the result.

The booksellers who police the Old World keep a careful watch there, particularly on the entity who inhabits the ancient hot spring. Yet this time it is not from Sulis Minerva that trouble starts. It comes from the discovery of a sorcerous map, leading left-handed bookseller Merlin into greater danger. A desperate rescue is attempted by his sister the right-handed bookseller Vivien and their friend, art student Susan Arkshaw, who is still struggling to deal with her own recently discovered heritage. The map takes the trio to a place separated from this world, maintained by deadly sorcery performed by an Ancient Sovereign and guarded by monstrous living statues of Purbeck marble. But this is only the beginning, as the booksellers investigate centuries of disappearances and deaths and try to unravel the secrets of a serial killer who has magical powers. If they do not stop this murderer, she will soon kill again. And this time, her target is not an ordinary mortal:- Review(s): "Garth Nix sets the standard for fantasy" - Leigh Bardugo:- (original cost £20.00). Signed by Author(s).

At its centre is Monica Johnson, cut off from her parents after falling in love with a foreigner, and her bitter struggle to raise her sons in the shadow of the wild moors of the north of England. Intertwined with her modern narrative is the ragged childhood of Emily Bronte's Heathcliff, the anti hero of 'Wuthering Heights' and one of literature's most enigmatic lost boys. Written in the tradition of Jean Rhys's 'Wide Sargasso Sea' and J.M. Coetzee's 'Foe', 'The Lost Child' is a multifaceted, deeply original response to Emily Bronte's masterpiece. A critically acclaimed storyteller, Phillips recovers the mysteries of the past to illuminate the predicaments of the present, getting at the heart of alienation, exile, and family by transforming a classic into a profound story that is singularly its own.
