Six weeks before D-Day a heavy American bombing raid inadvertently breached the walls of a temporary prison in Épinal, in Vichy France, where 3,000 Indian prisoners of war were being held. This account tells how 500 of those men navigated 100km of hostile countryside, dodging Nazis and collaborators and, with some help along the way, making it to the safety of Switzerland.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. 28 May 1940: Major Akbar Khan of the Royal Indian Army Service Corps marches at the head of 299 soldiers along the beach at Dunkirk - the only Indians in the BEF in France and the only ones at Dunkirk. With Stuka sirens wailing, shells falling in the water and Tommies lining up patiently to embark, these men of the Indian Army, carrying their disabled imam, find their way to the East Mole and embark for England in the dead of night. On reaching Dover, the men borrowed brass trays and started playing Punjabi folk music, upon which even 'many British spectators joined in the dance'. Who were these men? Where had they come from and why were they in France? And what happened to them after that? With the engaging style of a true storyteller, Ghee Bowman reveals in full, for the first time, the story of these soldiers, from their arrival in France on 26 December 1939 to their return at war's end to an India on the verge of partition. It is one of the war's hidden stories that casts fresh light on Britain and its empire. AUTHOR: Ghee Bowman is a PhD student at the University of Exeter. His interest in the little-known Indian presence at Dunkirk turned him on to a forensic journey of research that has spanned five countries and hundreds of lives. THE INDIAN CONTINGENT is his first book and the culmination of five years' research. He is a seasoned public speaker and has spoken on Force K6 of the British Indian Army numerous times over the past few years. He lives in Exeter. 12 b/w illustrations The definitive, engaging and previously little-known account of the 4,227 soldiers who comprised Force K6 of the British Indian Army Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

'An incredible and important story, finally being told' - Mishal Husain On 28 May 1940, Major Akbar Khan marched at the head of 299 soldiers along a beach in northern France. They were the only Indians in the British Expeditionary Force at Dunkirk. With Stuka sirens wailing, shells falling in the water and Tommies lining up to be evacuated, these soldiers of the British Indian Army, carrying their disabled imam, found their way to the East Mole and embarked for England in the dead of night. On reaching Dover, they borrowed brass trays and started playing Punjabi folk music, upon which even 'many British spectators joined in the dance'. What journey had brought these men to Europe? What became of them - and of comrades captured by the Germans? With the engaging style of a true storyteller, Ghee Bowman reveals in full, for the first time, the astonishing story of the Indian Contingent, from their arrival in France on 26 December 1939 to their return to an India on the verge of partition. On 11 May 1944, just four weeks before D-Day, sixty-seven American heavy bombers dropped 168 tons of bombs on the sunlit French town of Épinal on the Moselle river. Unbeknownst to the aircrew of the 'Mighty Eighth', this was the temporary home of over 3,000 Indian prisoners of war - and these bombs had just taken down the walls. The escapees took food and clothes and set off for the border. If they could make it to Switzerland, neutral territory, they would be safe. But between them and their goal were thousands of Nazis, collaborators and over 100km of French countryside. The Great Épinal Escape is the incredible story of the most successful escape of the Second World War. It is the story of how, during a period showcasing the worst of humanity - a period marked by brutality, bloodlust and fascism - ordinary people were able to demonstrate the best of humanity: resilience, support and a warm welcome. Ultimately, it is a story of hope.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. An explosive tale of courage, survival and the incredible 500 Indian prisoners of war who escaped the clutches of the Nazis and crossed the border to freedom. On 11 May 1944 just four weeks before D-Day 67 American heavy bombers dropped 168 tons of bombs on the sunlit French town of Epinal on the Moselle river. Unbeknownst to the aircrew of the 'Mighty Eighth', this was the temporary home of over 3,000 Indian prisoners of war, brought there by the occupying Germans a few months before, from camps across the Third Reich. The bombs pierced the camp wall in places, and the prisoners many of whom had made escape attempts previously grabbed food and clothes and headed off, dodging German bullets. They knew that the Swiss frontier was just 100 kilometres away to the south, and that, if they could cross the border, they would be safe. Having been inside for up to four years, they were eager to get home. For the next few weeks, the fields, mountains and forests of eastern France became the hiding place for hundreds of Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims and Gurkhas. By the end of June, a staggering figure of 500 had arrived and were being housed in camps in northern Switzerland by a nation with long experience of looking after those escaping from conflict. This was the largest successful escape of the Second World War. All of this took place just six weeks after the famous 'Great Escape' from Stalag Luft III. In that escape, 76 men got out, 50 were shot by the Gestapo, and just three (two Norwegians and a Dutchman) made it back to Britain. In contrast, the 500 Indian POWs who escaped from Epinal in that same season are completely unknown. No film has been made, no book written of this astonishing feat. Tracing the paths of 8 individuals who were at Epinal, this book tells the incredible true story of those 500 and the greatest escape of the Second World War. AUTHOR: Ghee Bowman has a PhD from the University of Exeter. His interest in the little-known Indian presence at Dunkirk started him on a forensic journey of research that has spanned five countries and hundreds of lives. THE INDIAN CONTINGENT is his first book and the culmination of five years' research. He is a seasoned public speaker and has given several talks on Force K6 of the British Indian Army. He lives in Exeter. 20 b/w illustrations An explosive tale of courage, survival and the incredible 500 Indian prisoners of war who escaped the clutches of the Nazis and crossed the border to freedom.
