36 pages with portrait in the text and 25 diagrams. Octavo (8 1/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's pictorial stapled wrappers. (Linde - No. 2781. Betts 33 - 27) First edition number 303. The present edition is a tribute to George R. Emery, who died in 1936, compiled by his friends. It includes, among other things, a short biography and 24 problems. George Reginald Emery (1902-1936) took up chess as a hobby and intellectual pastime only during the last few years of his life. He became an inveterate problem enthusiast. His name first appeared as a solver in the columns of the Grand Rapids Herald under Otto Wurzurg, the Cincinnati Enquirer under P G Keeney and the Atlanta Journal under r G Pfferkorn and the Chess Review Bulletin and various newspaper columns. So fast was his progress in the study of the problem art, he was invited to conduct the Problem Department of the Mid-West Chess News. In this chess weekly he ran both composing and solving tourneys. Hid analytical mind was able to unravel the most difficult and intricate problems, direct mates, sui-mates and "fairy" compositions alike, and the great "Fairy King" T R Dawson testifies to Emery's growing enthusiasm for this bizarre branch of the problem art. As a composer he made no pretensions, and left only one or two graceful samples of his budding talent in this direction. Condition: Problem tourney gift inscription to front wrapper verso. Some spots. Slight rust to staples and light edge wear else very good.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 186 pages with diagrams. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5") bound in quarter red cloth and black pebbled boards with Dobbs hand written title to front cover. Original manuscript. Gilbert Dobbs, throughout his interest in chess composition, kept log-books of his composition. This is one of the many log-books he created. It has at least one problem for each page of the book. He numbered these as he composed them. The problems were hand stamped with solutions below. As some became published the publication name and date is noted beside the problem. In addition to the hand written problems, there are some clipped newspaper chess columns secure in an archival sleeve and a few loose ones as well. laid in Some of his friends and other problemist names and addresses on pastedowns. These log-books were given to Frederick Gamage and friend and a protégé of A C White as was Dobbs. Gilbert S. Dobbs (Richmond, Kentucky, December 6 1867 - Carrollton, Georgia, February 14 1941) was a minister and chess composer. Son of a Baptist minister, Charles Edwin Willoughby Dobbs, he studied at Franklin College in Franklin Indiana and at Bethel College in Russellville , where he obtained an MA in 1888. Wanting to become himself a Baptist minister, he studied at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, where he was ordained pastor in 1890. He exercised his ministry in various US cities: Bloomington, Brownsville, Memphis, New Orleans and finally Carrolton in Georgia . He was a renouned poet. He wrote his master's thesis on using the poem as a thesis. He was also one of the world's top ten chess problemists and composed in two and three moves, generally with positions aesthetically attractive with hard keys. In collaboration with Edward Hanna wrote the book The Emery Memorial, an unpublished gem composed on New Year's day, 1936 (Carrollton, 1937), dedicated to Canadian problemist Reginald George Emery (1904-1936). Alain C. White and Richard E. Cheney dedicated the book A Chess Silhouette: One Hundred Chess Problems By the Reverend Gilbert Dobbs (Overbrook Press, Stamford, 1942). Condition: Fraying to edges, inner hinges cracked, occasionally soiled else a good but one of a kind item.
