Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Providing a personal perspective of domestic life in the 19th century, this fascinating biography of Lady Barker sheds light on a Victorian author, Anne Stewart, who lived in England, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Mauritius, Australia, and Trinidad through the course of her life. Illustrating the trials and tribulations of being a female author during that period of time, this volume also demonstrates how Anne's life was impacted by momentous historical events, such as the Indian Mutiny and the Zulu Wars. The only biography on Anne Stewart, it reveals the female perspective of what it meant to be a wife and mother during the greatest expansion of the British Empire. Lady Barker wrote 18 books, and is perhaps best known for "Station Life in New Zealand", which was republished by Vintage in 2000. The Seven Lives Of Lady Barker, published here for the first time in paperback, is a full account of the rich and turbulent life of this extraordinary woman. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: USED_FINE. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Photos, Art, Maps (illustrator). Reprint. In New Zealand in particular, Lady Many Anne Barker is best known for her account of high country farming life, "Station Life In New Zealand" published in 1870. This resulted from a comparatively short stay in NZ and was only one aspect of a life that was full of travel, adventure and experiences. In this fine biography (probably the first fully developed one), Betty Gilderdale has reavealed a great deal of interest about this remarkable Victorian women and her times. Born in Jamaica in 1831, she married Colonel Barker, was with him in India during the Mutiny. They travelled across India, with her husband dying soon after the journey. The widow returned to England, later married to Frederick Broome, farmer from Canterbury, NZ, where she next journeyed. Later in life she lived in South Africa, Mauritius, Australia and Trinidad, all outposts of the huge British Empire. She had six children and was intelligent, innovative and progressive. She edited one of the the first magazines for women, wrote 18 books and was princiople at an early school of cookery. The author has done stirling service by reavealing so much that was not known about this amazing woman and her achievements. First published 1996, this first reprint 1997. 312 pages including lists of Lady Barker's books and Frederick Broome's writings, bibliography, general references, manuscript collections and index, 18 b/w in-text illustrations, mainly photos with some art, two family trees, two maps. Dark green hard covers with gilt spine titles NF, ditto the text block, no inscriptions. Colour pictorial DJ is VG++ with trace creasing top front edge. A well produced publication.
