Softcover. Condition: USED_GOOD. "4to (200 x 145), early vellum binding rebacked, title-page soiled and spotted, inside general soiling, age toning, some small spots, the corners of last 5 leaves restored (no loss of text), a quite 'consulted' copy. Woodcut device, woodcut headings and initials, leaves [3], 144 [i.e. 145]. First edition, very rare, of what is considered the first treatise in Mannerism painting, quickly written after the closing of the Council of Trent and in the last year of Michelangelo's life, this is one of the first treatises on the theory of art which fully reflects the post-tridentine spirit. In fact, among the scholarly artistic quotations of the author, those on the Last Judgment appear to be of considerable interest: while Gilio is recognizing that Michelangelo has demonstrated what he can do with his art, still criticizes him for not following the dictates of the Bible and therefore he can only be condemned. In fact, he represented the angels without wings, some figures with the draperies lifted by the wind - although on the Day of Judgment the wind and the storms will cease and among the dead rising from the earth some are portrayed as naked skeletons, while others are already covered with flesh, where instead (according to the Bible version) the general resurrection will happen instantly; this judgment anticipates in fact the beginning of the work of 'moralization' (or coverage of nudes) by Daniele da Volterra, which will start in 1565, and will earn him the nickname "Il Braghettone" ("the breeches-maker"). Steinmann-Wittkower, Michelangelo-Bibliographie, n. 827; Zeri, Pittura e Controriforma, pp. 30-32. Blunt, Artistic Theory in Italy 1450-1600, p. 111-115. STC 301, not in Adams; Cicognara 134.".
