Reliure ancienne demi chagrin rouge rouge à larges coins, dos à faux nerfs janséniste, plats de percaline grise, couverture imprimée tirée sur papier jonquille conservée (les deux plats). Rousseurs éparses parfois fortes pour quelques feuillets. Reluire solide mais avec traces d'usure (coins, coiffes, dos), relié sur brochure. Petites taches, déchirures marginales sans gravité. Mérite une nouvelle reliure. Les épreuves sur chine sont en parfait état, sans rousseurs. Le tirage sur hollande a la décharge acide des épreuves ordinaires reliées juste avant. Première édition illustrée. Un des 130 exemplaires numérotés sur papier de Hollande avec une double suite des gravures sur chine avant la lettre (intercalée), seul tirage sur grand papier. Il a été également intercalé le tirage ordinaire de toutes les gravures. Notre exemplaire n'est pas numéroté (les exemplaires sont normalement numérotés à la plume). Cette première édition illustrée a paru en 59 livraisons de mai à décembre 1878. Elle est illustrée de 62 grandes compositions gravées sur bois, dont une sur le titre, une dans le texte et 60 à pleine page, d'après André Gill, Frédéric Régamey, Bellenger, Clairin, Alfred Garnier, Maurice Leloir, Auguste Renoir, etc. Les quatre compositions gravées d'après Renoir pour cet ouvrage sont fameuses - surtout celle du café-concert (p. 272). Elles sont ici en double épreuves (plus le tirage ordinaire). Ce sont les seules illustrations données par Pierre-Auguste Renoir pour un livre. L'Assommoir a paru en feuilleton dès 1876 dans Le Bien public, puis dans La République des Lettres, avant sa sortie en livre en 1877 chez l'éditeur Georges Charpentier. C'est le septième volume de la série Les Rougon-Macquart. L'ouvrage est totalement consacré au monde ouvrier et, selon Zola, c'est « le premier roman sur le peuple, qui ne mente pas et qui ait l'odeur du peuple ». L'écrivain y restitue la langue et les mœurs des ouvriers, tout en décrivant les ravages causés par la misère et l'alcoolisme. À sa parution, l'ouvrage suscite de vives polémiques car il est jugé trop cru. Gervaise Macquart, le personnage principal, une provençale originaire de Plassans, boiteuse mais plutôt jolie, a suivi son amant, Auguste Lantier, à Paris, avec leurs deux enfants, Claude et Étienne Lantier. Très vite, Lantier, paresseux, infidèle et ne supportant pas de vivre dans la misère, quitte Gervaise et ses enfants pour s'enfuir avec Adèle. Gervaise, travailleuse, reprend alors le métier de blanchisseuse qu'elle a appris à Plassans. Elle accepte d'épouser Coupeau, un ouvrier-zingueur auquel elle a fini par céder. Ils auront une fille, Anna Coupeau, dite Nana, héroïne d'un autre roman des Rougon-Macquart. Gervaise voit mourir Coupeau à Sainte-Anne — les crises de delirium tremens de Coupeau sont un des moments forts du roman. Elle se retrouve pratiquement à la rue, réduite à la mendicité. Elle meurt victime de la faim et de la misère, dans un réduit situé sous l'escalier de l'immeuble. Personne ne la voit mourir et c'est l'odeur qui alerte les voisins. Quand le roman paraît en volume en janvier 1877, il est interdit de vente dans les gares. Cette édition illustrée rend avec force l'ambiance du chef d'œuvre du naturalisme. Cette première édition illustrée (édition populaire diffusée en livraisons à prix très modique) mérite d'être recherchée par les bibliophiles, avec d'autant plus de ferveur que le tirage est comme ici sur grand papier de Hollande (les exemplaires du tirage ordinaire nous sont parvenus le plus souvent en médiocre condition de papier et de reliure). Bon exemplaire du tirage en grand papier de ce monument de la littérature française. Edition populaire parue en 57 livraisons et ornée de 66 compositions gravées sur bois, dont 14 en tête de chapitre et 52 à pleine page, d'après les compostions d'André Gill, Bertall, Georges Bellenger, Bigot, Georges Clairin, J. Audy et G. Nielsen. Nana, neuvième roman des Rougon-Macquart, a été publié sous forme de feuilleton dans Le Voltaire du 16 octobre 1879 au 5 février 1880, puis en volume chez Georges Charpentier, le 14 février 1880. Née en 1852 dans la misère du monde ouvrier, Anna Coupeau, dite Nana, est la fille de Gervaise Macquart et de Coupeau dont l'histoire est narrée dans L'Assommoir. Le début du roman la montre dans la gêne, manquant d'argent pour élever son fils Louis qu'elle a eu à l'âge de seize ans d'un père inconnu ; elle se prostitue, faisant des passes pour arrondir ses fins de mois. Ceci ne l'empêche pas d'habiter un riche appartement où l'un de ses amants, un riche marchand de Moscou, l'a installée. Son ascension commence avec un rôle de Vénus qu'elle interprète dans un théâtre parisien : elle ne sait ni parler ni chanter, mais l'habit impudique qui cache si peu de son corps de déesse affole tous les hommes. Elle se met un moment en ménage avec un homme qu'elle aime, le comédien Fontan. Etc. La publication de Nana fit scandale. L'édition populaire illustrée qui paraît deux ans après la première édition en librairie permet une diffusion massive de ce texte qui devint rapidement l'un des textes phares du chef de file de l'école naturaliste.
