Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1962 Australian War Memorial (Canberra, Australia), 6 3/4 x 9 1/2 inches tall blue cloth hardcover in publisher's unclipped dust jacket, gilt lettering to spine, copiously illustrated with black-and-white photographs and maps, index, xiii, 786 pp. A near fine copy - clean, bright and unmarked - in a like dust jacket which is nicely preserved and displayed in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. Note that this is a heavy and oversized book, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. ~K~ [3.5P] This volume is concerned mainly with the air war against Japan from December 1941 to the end of the first quarter of 1943 when air superiority was first wrested from the Japanese. It describes particularly the experiences and achievements of the Australian airmen who fought as integrated RAAF units or as members of units of the British and American air forces in Malaya, Burma, the East Indies and under General MacArthur in the South-West Pacific. In both time and geography the scope is wide. The opening chapters describe the genesis of the Royal Australian Air Force, its history between the wars and the problems of the development of the force in Australia and the Far Eastern theatre before the Japanese onslaught opened. It has been necessary to look back to the very beginnings of aviation in Australia - as far back as 1909 - and to extend the frame of the whole picture to include all the essential outside influences. There is thus a concentration on 43 months of war set within an over-all time span of more than 30 years.

Minor wear; offsetting to endpapers; toned text block edges; previous owner's inked inscription. Dustwrapper edges worn with chipping especially to spine panel extremities and corners (now professionally protected by superior non-adhesive polypropylene film). Very good to near fine. Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. Although specifying a fairly narrow period of history in the title, this volume tries to paint a thorough background of Australian air capability leading up to the Japanese attacks which began in 1939. In that sense, this work actually covers a period of history from 1909 through to the wresting of air superiority from the Japanese invaders in the first quarter of 1942. The main focus of the work is the years of the Second World War and Australia's participation in, not only keeping the Japanese forces away from Australian soil, but also as part of the integrated forces which supported General Macarthur and the Allies in the War of the Pacific, when the RAAF was most strongly deployed. This is a highly readable and engaging history, not only of Australia's air war during WW2, but of the establishment of a unified national airforce.
