Carroll L.V. Meeks traces the emergence of the train station from early nineteenth-century utilitarian sheds to monumental Beaux-Arts, Romanesque, and modern transit gateways across Europe and North America. Architectural scholarship throughout the monograph analyzes the depot as a cultural and technological manifestation of the Industrial Revolution. Published by Dover Publications in 1995 as an unabridged republication of the 1956 Yale University Press study, the work is heavily illustrated, combining black-and-white photographic halftones with engineering diagrams, floor plans, and cutaways drawn by Jack Rose. Saul Steinberg supplied the expressive frontispiece, while Edmond Gillon, Jr. oversaw the cover design. Historical analysis covers terminals including London's Charing Cross, Berlin's Anhalter Bahnhof, Paris's Gare Saint-Lazare, and New York's Pennsylvania Station designed by McKim, Mead & White. Meeks, a Yale University professor and former president of the Society of Architectural Historians, received the Alice Davis Hitchcock Award for this structural taxonomy of nineteenth-century picturesque eclecticism. Preserved as an association copy believed to link two figures in American architectural history, the volume connects Meeks's scholarship to the working reference collection of David Kahler, 1936 to 2026, FAIA fellow, leader of Kahler Slater, co-architect of the Milwaukee Art Museum's Quadracci Pavilion alongside Santiago Calatrava, and board member of the Center for Railroad Photography & Art. Scholars of industrial heritage, preservation architects, and transportation historians treat the treatise as a benchmark in civic engineering and urban history.
