, Ginsberg, Morris, 1889-1970. Sociology. New York: H. Holt, 1934, 255pp.: diagr. 17 cm, very good small black cloth but ex-library copy with bookplate, stamps, call number blacked out on spine, otherwise very good copy. Home university library of modern knowledge, [174]. Deals with culture, civilization, race, environment, mental development, the growth of socieities. Between the wars Ginsberg and L. T. Hobhouse were the only sociologists in England (J. A. Banks, 1989) and had done empirical work only in the sense of collecting data from published historical reports. In his review A. M. Carr-Saunders wrote amusingly: "It is one thing to welcome a book like this, and another to admit that is an argument for, and far less a proof of, the existence of sociology." Which shows the status of sociology in Britain at the time. Ginsberg would greatly assist Karl Mannheim during the early years of his emigration in London, ending however in professional conflict.
