2004 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1846). HB. ix + 182pp. The author of this account, as well as being a Forces Chaplain, was a prolific military historian. His scholarly account of the first Afghan War begins with a detailed description of Afghanistainâs hostile terrain and its equally hostile (to outsiders) history. The book describes the early stages of the war, including Britainâs decision to cross the Indus river and invade; the march on Khandahar and the successful storming of Ghuznee. Rev. Gleig then narrates the surrender of the pro-Russian ruler of Afghanistan, Dost Mohammed, the peaceful occupation of the capital, Kabul, and the part that Saleâs Brigade played in the lengthy attempts to subdue Afghanistanâs unruly provinces. The narrative concludes with the capture of the city of Jellalabad, which was then besieged by hostile tribesmen before the garrison were relieved.
