No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Glencairn Balfour-Paul (illustrator). A nicely observed and decorative watercolour of a village scene in Northern Libya during WWII, painted by Glencairn Balfour- Paul (1917-2008). Painted on watercolour paper and framed with a cream mount in a tarnished silver effect frame under glass. The image size is 286mm x 219mm. Frame size is 471mm x 406mm. Glencairn Balfour- Paul was a celebrated British Diplomat , academic and Arabist, who served as British Ambassador to Iraq, Jordan and Tunisia. He served as an infantry officer in WWII in Libya where he made sketches of the villages and landscape. He was known for his love of poetry, archaeology and languages, but less known perhaps, for his passion for art. At Baalbek, for example, he said that on waking he drew furiously and of course, broke into verse. This painting of a village scene shows an exuberance of colour typical of North Africa and is nicely observed. A nice piece. N.B. This is a heavy item and will require extra postage.

First appearance in print of the text of an address on Bahrain, Qatar, and the Trucial States, as well as the momentous changes witnessed in the Gulf in the 1960s, by H. G. Balfour Paul, given shortly after concluding his term as Britain's Deputy Political Resident in the region. After wartime service in Sudan, where he mastered Arabic, Balfour Paul (1917-2008) entered the diplomatic service, posted first to Santiago and then to Beirut as First Secretary. In the mid-1960s, he was appointed Political Agent in Dubai, playing a central role in the deposing of Abu Dhabi's ruler Sheikh Shakhbut. A further posting in Bahrain under Sir William Luce was followed by his first ambassador-level appointment in Iraq. After leaving the service, he became an influential academic, most well-known for his The End of Empire in the Middle East: Britain's Relinquishment of Power in her Last Three Arab Dependencies (Cambridge University Press, 1991). On the ground in the Gulf for much of the last decade, Balfour Paul impresses upon his audience the impact of recent acute political and economic shifts and the demise of old certainties. Of particular note are: oil discoveries in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Qatar; the British withdrawal from Aden; London's decision to end Britain's wider military presence in 1971; and attempts to forge more regional unity, for example through the Council of Rulers in the Trucial States. Large octavo, pp. 12-19 within the journal. Original red card wrappers, spine and front cover lettered in black. Small splits to spine ends, internally clean and bright. A near-fine copy.
