Condition: Very Good. xxxv, 244 pages; Contents clean and secure in original white vellum with red and black lettering, top edge gilt, crease to endpaper inside front board, minor toning at spine. Former owner's name on ffep - "Maria Gamball / December 1890" A lovely etching of the three muses and two putti reading as frontispiece with tissue guard. An 18 page introduction by Saintsbury in which he gives a development of the French lyric. Additionally, each section has commentary by Saintsbury. Saintsbury's commentary is in English; the poems are in French. The poems encompass poets from the 12th to the 19th century, including contributions from Albert Glatigny, Adam De La Halle, Clement Marot, Joachim Du Bellay, Mathurin Regnier, Theophile De Viaud, Charles Baudelaire, Andre Chenier, Lamartine, Victor Hugo, and others. Frontispiece by Henry Gillard Glindoni (1850 1913) was a British artist noted for historical genre works. Glindoni's speciality was that of 17th and 18th century costume and he was noted for his paintings of Cardinals. He frequently exhibited between 1872 and 1904, at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, Old Water Colour Society, the Society of British Artists in London, and the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham. He was accepted as a full member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1879 and an associate member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1883.

Size of binding: 5 ĵ in. x 8 in., xxxv (Introduction & Contents), 244 pp. Engraved frontispiece of Muses & cherubs by Henry Gillard Glindoni, with tissue guard (plate & guard show light tanning, small tear to corner of guard). Finely printed on a laid paper, watermarked: J. W. Whatman. Bound in full vellum by Birdsall, with their gilt binder's stamp on the lower edge of the inner front cover: Birdsall & Son Northampton. The spine shows three raised bands, with two gilt title labels: the top label in olive green leather with brown inlay with a design of gilt dots, reading: French Lyrics; the lower label in brown leather, reading: Parchment Library; gilt at the base of the spine: London 1882; with gilt borders & floral designs; the front & back covers show a gilt, floral "aesthetic" design in the center, with triple-line borders, with small poppy designs in the corners, cover edges gilt, with gilt dentelles on inner cover vellum turn-ins; top-edge gilt, with headbands, light blue silk bookmarker bound in (this is detached); Victorian "aesthetic" design gold & brown endpapers, featuring a design of owls & oak leaves & acorns; fine, engraved, heraldic bookplate on the front gilded paste-down: Horatio Noble Pym (motto: Fortis est Veritas, with three owls in the shield), and a more recent book label pasted under this. Vellum shows age mellowing, some light wear to the gilt designs on spine and covers; frontispiece shows tan spotting, age-related tanning to deckled paper fore-edge, a few, scattered tan spots to page margins. Overall, a well-preserved copy of the large paper edition. Scan shows the spine and front cover.
