Februar 1587 wurde Maria Stuart, die Königin der Schotten, im großen Saal des englischen Schlosses Fotheringhay wegen Hochverrats hingerichtet. In dem kurzen Prozess, der ihrer Verurteilung vorausging, hatte man sie angeklagt, sich mit ausländischen Mächten verbündet zu haben, um Königin Elisabeth zu ermorden, und ihren eigenen Anspruch auf den englischen Thron, den sie zeitlebens immer wieder geltend gemacht habe, durchzusetzen. Maria Stuart war im Mai 1586 freiwillig nach England gekommen, in der Hoffnung von Elisabeth Unterstützung gegen ihre schottischen Untertanen zu erhalten, die sich gegen sie erhoben, sie vorübergehend gefangengenommen und zur Abdankung gezwungen hatten. Statt ihr die versprochene Hilfe bei der Rückkehr auf ihren Thron zu gewähren, hatte Elisabeth Maria widerrechtlich in Haft genommen. Neunzehn Jahre waren so vergangen, während denen Marias Hoffnung, freigelassen und in Schottland wiedereingesetzt zu werden, immer wieder enttäuscht worden war. Das komplizierte und vom psychologischen Standpunkt aus mitunter auch undurchsichtige Verhältnis zwischen Elisabeth und Maria, das schließlich mit dem Tod der einen Königin auf Befehl der anderen endete, wirft zahlreiche Fragen auf : Welche Risiken war Maria mit ihrer Reise nach England eingegangen, und inwiefern stellte Maria für Elisabeth im Leben wie im Tod ein Problem dar Warum hielt Elisabeth Maria neunzehn Jahre lang gefangen und ließ sie dann schließlich doch hinrichten, während sie sie zuvor stets gegenüber ihren Lords in Schutz genommen hatte Und warum zögerte Elisabeth so lange, bis sie eine endgültige Entscheidung über das Schicksal ihrer Cousine traf Um diese Fragen zu beantworten, muss man zunächst den Umständen der Reise Marias nach England nachgehen, die mit ihrer Inhaftierung endete. Zudem muss man sich ein Bild von den zahlreichen Verschwörungen machen, an denen Maria während ihrer langen Gefangenschaft beteiligt war, und ihre eigenen Motive von denen ihrer Verbündeten sowie derer, für die sie zwar das Symbol und der Fokus ihrer Hoffnungen war, deren Ziele sie selbst jedoch ablehnte, unterscheiden. Am Ende steht die Frage, weshalb Elisabeth schließlich ihr Einverständnis zu der in ihren Implikationen so problematischen öffentlichen Hinrichtung gab. Eigenhändige Abschrift Betty Paolis ihrer Übertragung von Walter Scotts "Pibroch of Donuil Dhu" (1816), die 1870 in ihrem Lyrik-Band "Neueste Gedichte" (Wien, Gerold) abgedruckt wurde, mit Unterschrift. - Betty Paoli war befreundet mit Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, und bekannt u.a. mit Lenau, Hammer-Purgstall, Adalbert Stifter, der sie sehr schätzte und Grillparzer, der sie als "der erste Lyriker Österreichs" bezeichnete. Dies war sicher als Hinweis auf ihre eigenständige und "männliche" Art zu leben und zu arbeiten gemeint. Kritik an weiblichen Lebens- und Arbeitsbedingungen übte sie in ihren Werken eher versteckt und sah Bildung und den Kampf für öffentliche Anerkennung weiblicher Leistungen als eine Säule der Frauen-Emanzipation. - Doppelt gefaltet u. etwas knickspurig.

Mit ihren einfühlamen Gedichten und kritischen Aufsätzen wurde Betty Paoli zu einer wichtigen Figur der frühen Frauenbewegung.
