When great-grandpa Homo Habilis picked up a handy rock and banged on another rock to make a rock that was better suited to sharpening a stick so that he could kill something more efficiently, he set all his grandchildren on the path toward the dark and doubtful future in which we now reside. You look at that rock and it's hard to see any points about that rock that's different from any other rock. You look at a computer and it doesn't immediately recommend itself to you. What's it for? You look at a jackknife and pick it up, and after a moment's messing with it and probably cutting your thumb, you say, "Yeah. I know just what I could do with this." And off you go to do that good old Neanderthal trick of getting dinner without becoming dinner yourself. But a computer? It doesn't look like anything. You could shake it and poke at it and it would remain as mute as the Sphinx. You don't know what it's good for by just looking at it. It's a really fancy tool, something like your brain. Full circle.".

Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A striking Limited Edition poster, this being #51 of just 300 produced signed and numbered by Goines. Goines became famous due to his association with Alice Waters and her iconic Berkeley restaurant, Chez Panisse. Goines produced his first poster for the restaurant in 1972 and many more followed. "The design for this 1987 poster by David Lance Goines was first commissioned as a bottle label by Corti Brothers Grocery in Sacramento to note the introduction of some of the first extra-virgin olive oil made in the United States. According to Corti, the labels were originally made for Antinori, the great Italian wine (and olive oil) producer, but a freeze knocked out the olive crop. Antinori returned the labels to Corti, whose grocery was to carry the Antinori oil. Corti got Goines to re-do the labels for the Pallido and Verdesco oils, ?Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Spring Harvest Mission Olives,? simultaneously requesting a large number of the 4 color posters (unsigned, number130 in the Goines repertory) which he (Corti) could sell in the store. He also obtained the progressives from Goines, eventually giving the set of progressives and several of the posters to the National Museum of American History in 2012. The poster documents the arrival in the U.S. of the first wave of soon-to-be well known and much favored California-produced olive oils." - Smithsonian Pallido is a historic California Extra Virgin Olive Oil, famously associated with this 1987 poster, which documented early premium California-produced olive oil. The oil was specifically made from Spring Harvest Mission Olives and is part of the story of pioneering California olive oil, championed by experts like Darrell Corti. This beautiful piece measures approximately 24" X 17 1/4" and is signed and mubered by Goines in the lower right. Mild foxing along the top edge and a very light dampstain along the bottom edge. "The label and oil were designed to accompany fine, high-grade American food products, with the poster now residing in the National Museum of American History. It was a key part of introducing American consumers to California-produced extra virgin olive oil. Signed.

Lancelot, the best knight in the world, was disqualified because of his carnal love for Guenevere. Perceval didn't love anybody or anything, except his own purity. His strength was as the strength of ten because his heart was pure, and whenever he found himself in danger of becoming impure he was saved by some simple act of faith. Fiends burst like sausages all around him as soon as he made the sign of the cross, which he always did just in the nick of time. He was, in fact, too pure for the mundane altogether, and after attaining the object of his quest, passed out of this world without even bothering to die.

I don't get that many good ideas and I hate to waste them. I like libraries and especially the Berkeley Public Library (or berkeley pvblic library, as it says on the front). When it was printed I packaged them up and took them to the main desk and set the packages down and said, "Here's your posters," and left. For a while the people at the library accused one another of ordering a poster without proper authorization, and the bureaucratic fur flew. But when somebody finally had the bright idea to give me a call and ask what was going on, and I told them it was for free and nobody had overstepped any departmental bounds, they were much relieved and asked for more.".

Third edition of 4943 of which 100 copies are signed 1-100, 26 are signed A-Z as artist's proofs, and four sets are signed as progressives. This poster says it all. After a bit of batting around, peering into this artistic style and that, trying them on for size, I settled on the Vienna Secession and the Jugendstil-the German Art Nouveau-as models. They, in turn, draw from the deep well of Japanese ukio-e woodblock prints of the Edo period, to which the West was exposed from the third quarter of the nineteenth century. The Velo-Sport design is bilaterally symmetrical, employs avian symbolism, contrasts light and heavy elements-the tiny bicyclists racing the great death-symbol steam locomotive-and cheerfully throws together two completely different kinds of perspective. My fascination with complementary colors, particularly blue and orange, may stem ultimately from childhood exposure to The Bookhouse Books, dating from 1920 and still-so far as I know-in print. To soften the transition from one area of color into the next, I adopted the soft grey or pale color outline motif from Otto Obermeier and Ludwig Hohlwein, though it was a common enough design element through the early part of this century.
