Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. 12mo. 16.5 by 10.5 cm. clvii, 44, [1] pp. With five hand-colored and illuminated plates, including title, plus illuminated devices and decoration elsewhere. While the plates are printed, the coloring and illumination is such that it is a fine simularcrum of manuscript illumination. This work is in fact a literary hoax, simulating a Medieval Romance but in fact penned by Michel and promoted by the extensive notes and annotations that follow the chronicles. The leaves are a light vellum, and this copy has a resplendent decorative green cloth relief with a rich gilt background that is quite distinctive. Pink moire endpapers. Lovely gilt decoration, including border, on the straight-grained morocco slipcase. A few light fox marks, but essentially clean and mostly pristine. Con 4 tavv. fuori testo incise da Rouarge. Frontespizio in rosso e nero, e complessive 8 iniziali ornate (4 piccole e 4 a tutta pagina); caratteri gotici. Leg. tela rossa editoriale, titolo in oro al dorso. Qualche fioritura al frontespizio e alle tavole, ma buon es. (12557) Libro curioso e non comune, che ebbe un "tirage à petit nombre" (Brunet, II/1663), con alcuni esemplari miniati. In realtà il testo, contenente 4 presunte cronache inedite, impresso in caratteri gotici e tratto da un presunto manoscritto della metà del XV secolo, fu opera dello stesso Francisque Michel (1809-87), dotto filologo e medievalista di Lione, che vi collocò alcune note esplicative, seguite poi dal testo di Charles Nodier, Recherches sur le Style, et particulièrement sur celui des Chroniques.…
