Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Book Club Edition. Damage to front cover bottom right side of book.Anna Kowalczek arrived on Capitol Hill at the start of World War II, old Senator Seab Cooley of South Carolina predicted, "Mark my words, that little lady is going to own this town someday." And thirty year…s later, Anna almost does: as widow of amiable but foredoomed Senator Gordon Hastings of Texas-as columnist-as television personality-as major political figure-and above all as founder and publisher of the Washington Inquirer and head of a media empire that stretches from coast to coast. How Anna clawed her way to the top of the Washington heap from a modest Polish home in Punxsutawney, PA., is related in this engrossing novel of the Washington scene Allen Drury knows so well and has described so powerfully in his previous political novels. His tale of Anna, her rise and those who either successfully accompanied her or fell by the wayside is, as Seab Cooley also remarked, "some skeerazzle." Here you will meet the people who had to live with Anna and the four horsemen (or, as Anna would put it now, "horsepersons") who came as eager youngsters to the wild and wacky Washington of World War II and stayed to become some of the town's top journalists: Ed Macomb, the narrator, who serves loyally as managing editor of the Inquirer until Anna with the greatest love and reluctance slits his throat professionally and kicks him out- Fat and faithful Bessie Revere, who receives the same treatment yet also remains loyal- Talbot Farson, who survives Presidential enmity, a Congressional investigation and a dubious political past to retain his triumphant grip on the news as editor of the Inquirer- Unhappy Gordon Hastings, married to one of Washington's most ambitious women and eventually destroyed- Young Gordie and Lisa, Anna's children, the only two people their mother couldn't dominate. And, always, Anna herself, brilliant, ruthless, all-conquering-and yet somehow pathetic and vulnerable, likable and touching in spite of the whim-of-iron qualities that make her at the same time one of Washington's most successful women and one of its more formidable monsters. ark my words, that little lady is going to own this town someday." And thirty years later, Anna almost does: as widow of amiable but foredoomed Senator Gordon Hastings of Texas- as columnist- as television personality- as major political figure- and abov (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Ex-library with Usual Faults. Social and political history of the modern South. This collection of essays on the social and political history of the modern South consider the region's poor, racial mores and race relations, economic opportunity, Protestant activism, political coalitions and interest groups,…social justice, and progressive reform. History and Hope in the Heart of Dixie illuminates the dual role of historian and public advocate in modern America. In a time when the nation's eyes have been focused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita onto the vulnerability and dire condition of poor people in the South, the applicability of research, teaching, and activism for this voiceless element seems all the more relevant. Responding to the example of Wayne Flynt, whose fierce devotion to his state of Alabama and its region has not blinded his recognition of the inequities and despair that define southern life for so many, the scholars assembled in this work present contributions to the themes Flynt so passionately explored in his own work. Two seasoned observers of southern history and culture--John Shelton Reed and Dan T. Carter--offer assessments of Flynt's influence on the history profession as a whole and on the region of the South in particular. Ex-library but clean and tight.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st. (UK) Presumed 1st edition. No markinga, Fine in Fine dust jacket. Hardcover, xxxii, 205pp, line maps, B&W photos. From the jacket: In July 1942, Major Gordon Lett was taken prisoner at the fall of Tobruk. After fourteen months in the notorious prison camps at Bari and… Chieti, he escaped at the Armistice of September 1943 from the camp at Veano and took to the mountains above the Cisa Pass. Rather than return to England, he founded and led an entirely non-political band of highly-successful partisans, the Battaglione Internazionale. The group fought and harassed the Brigate Nere and the Germans along the Magra valley from North of Pontremoli to La Spezia for 18 months. They were so influential to the success of the Allied advance that permanent lines of communication with the Allies were established, supplies dropped by air and, later, SAS troops sent in to assist the Brigade. 500 Allied troops escaped to safety via Rossano. Gordon's *Military Origins* is a detailed exploration of the historical roots of military institutions, customs, and traditions. Gordon meticulously traces the evolution of military organization and discipline from ancient armies to mod…ern command structures. This volume is invaluable for military scholars and historians seeking context behind ceremonial practices, rank hierarchies, and tactical doctrines. Gordonâs writing bridges the academic and the accessible, making it a reference for students of military heritage and lineage. The book is particularly respected in officer training and military academies for its historical breadth and analytical clarity. The book itself is in near fine condition.
