La lengua vasca presenta, respecto al resto de las lenguas paleohispánicas conocidas, una curiosa paradoja: que sin haber dejado redactado ningún texto seguro en la antigüedad es la única de ellas que ha sobrevivido sorprendentemente a la efectiva romanización de la Península Ibérica. Los primeros textos… largos en lengua vasca son del s. XVI, aunque ciertas colecciones de refranes y cantares recopilados en ese siglo tengan sin duda una mayor antigüedad. Los testimonios indirectos de la lengua, consistentes en topónimos, nombres de persona y un puñado de glosas, entre las cuales son famosas dos de las emilianenses, se atestiguan desde el s. IX y X en adelante.La idea de que la lengua vasca remonta a un mundo previo al de la romanización fue defendida por los primeros eruditos renacentistas, muchos de los cuales la hacían incluso general y única para toda la península. Por su parte, Guillermo de Humboldt en su influyente Prüfung (1821) consideró que la lengua vasca, gracias a su aislamiento genético y su pertenencia a un mundo lingüístico anterior no solo a la romanización sino a la indoeuropeización, era un medio muy valioso para proyectar luz sobre la prehistoria lingüística de Europa occidental, idea que subyace tanto a propuestas sustratistas tradicionales como a ciertas modernas hipótesis étnico-lingüísticas sobre la población paleo-europea.
