A comprehensive exposition of 18th century medical practice based on interpreting the aphorisms of Hippocrates in Latin. The text comprises 8 books, misleadingly entitled 'Liber primus'. Jan (or Johannes de) Gorter (1689-1762), town physician and director of the botanical garden at Harderwijk, here contributes to the classification of diseases attempted during the 18th century; it is considered his main work. Gorter enjoyed a considerable reputation both as a botanist and medical doctor. Linnaeus had submitted his doctoral thesis to him at Harderwijk in 1735; Gorter acted as personal physician to the Czarina Elisabeth of Russia 1754-1758. Blake, p181 lists the Padua 1795 edn.
