CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Original blue cloth covers are slightly soiled and stained. Interior is clean and tight. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Privately printed account by Charles Gotwalt. He enlisted into Co. 8, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry, at the age of 15 1/2, in August 1861. His short dictation & reminiscences is written as described in a plain, simple narrative. Initially assigned to Milroy's Division in the Army of the Potomac, he was twice captured. His first capture occurred at Carter's Woods in June 1863 with 200 other members of the 87th; held at Richmond, after which he was paroled in September 1863. He rejoined the regiment as it prepared for the Wilderness Campaign. He was witness to the killing of General Sedgwick by a Confederate sharpshooter at Spotsylvania. He was again captured near Petersburg and spent much of the rest of the war in prison; including Libby, Danville, and Andersonville. Provides a god description of the conditions at Andersonville. Released, he was taken to Annapolis where he was hospitalized. He was mustered out in Harrisburg on 2 February 1865.…
