He will arrange with Ross to have the memorial 'presented on the earliest possible opportunity'.

The note is written in a neat hand, and reads: 'Sir | Permit me to offer you my sincere thanks for the valuable communication you have so obligingly procured, relative to the restoration of Rooksey'.

4pp, 4to. Bifolium. Panel, a little under one-sixth of total area, missing from bottom outside corner of second leaf, with attendant loss to text, otherwise in good condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded three times. A good long letter in a neat and stylish hand, with a firm underlined signature. He begins by writing that he has that morning 'received the Petition from Belfast which I was pleased to expect from having seen in the Report of your meeting that you had done Mr Dunbar and myself the honor to entrust its presentation to us'. He complains of the 'loss to the public, & the great disadvantage to a member anxious to give effect to the representation of the people, occasioned by the regulation made in the year 1835 regarding the presentation of Petitions in the House of Comms by which we are restricted from doing more than merely mentioning the quarter whence the Petition emanates the number of Signatures & the prayer'. He considers that by this regulation the member of parliament is 'shut out from any mention of other circumstances which would give it interest and arrest attention'. He continues: 'I feel this particularly in the case of this petition and others which I have presented and expect from Ireland, as I shall be unable to do little more than make a statement in a very few sentences regarding it'. After a brief discussion of house business he writes: 'I attach even more [last word underlined twice] importance to the Irish Petitions in this matter than even to the Scotch ones because they shew an extended sympathy with the Church of Scotland, even from those who have no similar end and no analagous grievance amongst themselves to complain of, & whose feeling is therefore purely disinterested'. He turns to the 'course likely to be taken by the Governmt.', with reference to a report received from 'Capt. Gordon (brother to Lord Alexander who takes a most lively interest in the question)', with whom he dined 'at the Speakers on Saturday evening', and to 'the abolition of all patronage' in the Church of Scotland.

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. He has asked his friend 'Mr Reilly' to assure the recipient that he will be with him on the arranged date. 'Independently of my personal interewst in Methodism from the fact of my family having been for 35 years in connexion with that body, I take as a Christian, an extended interest in the success of your mission, one of the most valuable, I believe, in existence'. After attending a public meeting in Belfast, he will travel 'the same night to Liverpool' and then to London. 'I must travel, which I am now unwilling to do, by the Railroad on Sabbath night. By this means I must please God to be with you.' Should he be prevented from attending, 'be assured of my most ardent good wishes: and at all times, when my exertions, or presence can be of use I shall be but too happy, to have them called for by you, or the friends of Methodism'.

The author describes his work in an introductory note as 'an elegant and ingenious poem in heroic verse; suggested by the third Satire of Juvenal; wherein the foolishness of the institutions of this University, and the dullness and dishonesty of its inhabitants are for the first time properly exposed'. The influence of Samuel Johnson (another adapter of Juvenal and also an Oxford man) is strong, as the opening indicates: 'Though on my brow there rose an angry frown | When B - ll - l's [i.e. 'Balliol's'] Dons sent poor Patroclus down, | Yet envy stirred me as he caught his train, | No more to hear the Oxford bells again, | But far removed from godlesness and Greek, | To earn in town an honest pound a week.' Caldecott's entry in the Oxford DNB notes his 'happy talent for light verse'. Scarce: only three copies on COPAC, the first at the British Library (erroneously dated to 1910 and attributed to Geoffrey Howard), the second the National Library of Wales, the third Oxford.

In his capacity as Quarter Master General, Brownrigg informs Brock that 'the Establishment of Entrenching Tool Carts, and Tools attached to the several Regiments in Great Britain, shall cease on the 24th of June next, and that the Horses, Harness, and Carts used for carrying the Tools shall be forthwith Sold by Publick Auction.' Gives instructions for delivering over the 'Horses, Carts, and Harness'. An officer of the Royal Waggon Train will superintend, and Brock must report his progress.
