Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 5 3/4") bound originally paper back bound in red cloth with white lettering to spine. From the libraries of James C Gifford and Thomas R Hester. First paper back edition. A desire to recreate Minoan palaces, villas, and houses of the Late Bronze Age inspired the author of this book to undertake an eight year research program that has radically modified our conception of the appearance of Cretan dwellings. James Collier Gifford (1927-1973) was an anthropologist with a particular interest in the archaeology of the American Southwest and ancient Mesoamerica. He was born in New York City and attended private boarding high schools; the Thatcher School in Ojai, California and the Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs. After receiving a bachelor s degree from the University of Arizona in 1951, he married fellow anthropology student Carol A. Gifford (b. 1930) who became his editor and closest colleague in Southwest and Mayan studies. He received his master s degree in 1957 from the University of Arizona, with a thesis on Archaeological explorations in caves of the Point of Pines region. After military service he continued his studies at Harvard, receiving a doctorate in 1963 with a dissertation on the ceramics of ancient Belize titled A conceptual approach to the analysis of prehistoric pottery. Thomas R Hester is professor emeritus of the University of Texas at Austing and is the author of a number of works on anthropology and archaeology. He is still active in the Texas Archaeological Society and is often a frequent speaker. Condition: Originally paper back, rebound in cloth. Gifford and Hester's signature to half title page else very good.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust jacket condition: No Jacket. Blue cloth binding. Tightly bound. Solid retired library book with usual library markings; else VG. Text free of underlining, writing and highlighting. 424 p. incl. front., pl., ports., facsims. 24 cm. FOREWORD This, the first general survey of English literary periodicals that has ever been written, makes no claim to ex-haustiveness or finality. The author does not regard it as a definitive work, nor does he expect it to escape the criticism to which the pioneer in any field is usually subjected. In an undertaking so broad as that which overlooks two and one half centuries of English literature no one can be infallible; and the writer of this book recognizes many weaknesses in his completed work?weaknesses that more concentrated effort on special fields, and the always advancing knowledge of individual investigators, will remedy in later histories of English literary periodicals. The writer's many obligations are here acknowledged with gratitude, even though, for the most part, this may be done only by a general avowal.
