"A História da Franco-Maçonaria em Portugal, de M. Borges Grainha, foi publicada pela primeira vez em 1912. O seu sucesso foi de tal ordem que logo conheceu nova edição em 1914. A razao entende-se facilmente na medida em que ela corresponde a uma tentativa de historiar, tão completamente quanto possível, a Maço-naria em Portugal, desde o seu início no século XVIII, no período compreendido entre 1733 e 1912, e é publicada numa época agitada, pouco depois da implantação da República, no quadro dos conflitos que decorrem desse evento, entre a Maçonaria e a Igreja, em Portugal como noutros países. Outro aspecto relevante que Borges Grainha salientou enquanto membro do Grande Oriente Unido em 1914, e está patente nesta obra, é o de que "o espírito da Maçonaria é o espírito da libertação, da solidariedade e do aperfeiçoamento social e humano".
