CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: John Chipman Gray, a lawyer before the Civil War, was commissioned into Company H, 3rd Massachusetts Cavalry on October 7, 1862. He left that unit to accept a commission as a major in the U.S. Volunteers Adjutant General Department on July 25, 1864. Gray was wounded at the Third Battle of Winchester on September 19, 1864, and resigned from the Army on July 14, 1865. John Codman Ropes studied law during the war and was a good friend of John Gray, and after the war became a noted military historian who is well known for his work on the Civil War. These war-time letters written by the two form the basis of this fine work. REFERENCES: DORN II 2071; NEVINS I pg 97: "The unique correspondence of two prominent Bostonians who wrote of the war with deep insight; Gray was an officer, and Ropes gained eminence as an historian." MULLINS/REED #36: "Both Bostonians, Gray was an officer while Ropes studied law during the war. One tells of active participation in the war while the other tells what he thinks of it. Their letters contain much that is instructive and valuable." EISNER 497: "The intellectual nature of both men, Rope's absorbing interest, and Gray's staff service make this correspondence exceedingly interesting. The acute observational powers of these men and their precision of language and restraint of temperament make this collection valuable.".
