Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. "Vortex" was, what used to be called a "small magazine", or literary journal. It was edited and managed by Shep Greene in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. For all of its short life and virtual obscurity, it managed to present some very good authors, even some of international stature. In this second issu…e, from Winter 1968, we find an early short story by Frederick Busch who went on to become an acclaimed novelist. Also in these pages are works by Scots writer Robert Nye; esteemed English poet Charles Tomlinson; Emilio Sanchez of Ecuador, widely published in South America; and poet Bruce Berlind, who, like Busche, was a professor at Colgate University. There are also a number of previously unpublished writers, ensuring that "Vortex" upheld the tradition of Small Magazines in America promoting new writers. CONTENTS : * ROBERT NYE - The Story of Sdeath and Northangerland From the Eighth Book of "The History of the Kingdom of Angria"by Patrick Branwell Bronte * CHARLES TOMLINSON - The Instance * JAMES TATE - Three Poems * EMIL H. OBER - In Shapiro's Emporium * VERN RUTSALA - Afternoon * PAUL NELSON - Dewey Lagoons * EMILE SANCHEZ - Ramon En La Isla De Amor (Ramon on the Island of Love) * BRUCE BERLIND - Poiesis * MATT ROCHE - On First Looking Into Milton's "Paradise Lost" * ERIC HAGGMAN - Meeting in New York * PHIL MIDDLEMAN - Untitled * JOSEPH WILSON - Two Poems * STEPHEN ROZWENC - A Letter to Martha * HAROLD OBER - A Tribute to a Great American * FREDERICK BUSCH - Hunt Them Where They Hide and Kill them Dead [Early story by Busch which predates his first novel] * MICHAEL LASSELL - Untitled AUTHOR UNKNOWN - Faux Pas Some may find the following statement by editor Shep Greene to be interesting : ||> Somewhere between the newspaper and "The Atlantic Monthly" lies the 'little magazine', a curious alternative , where clearness is often only a misdemeanor, and in many cases no more harshly punishable than is obscurity. Curious also, because it has not yet reached the point where it can judge its contributors without in turn being as sternly judged by them. The 'little magazine' is in constant flux; it must justify its diminutive quantity by offering as many kinds of writing as possible, by dismissing any fear of publishing the first attempt or experimental writing, and by striving for a quality which is a little bit better than that with which the big magazine is frequently able to get away. In this spirit arrives "Vortex Number 2".<|| TITLE : Vortex ISSUE : Vol. 1, No. 2 DATE : Winter 1968 EDITORS : Shep Greene - John Incledon - Al Mussen - Hal Ober - Ed Shean IMPRINT : Vortex PLACE : Glen Ridge, New Jersey STATUS : OP - Out of Print PHYSICAL DETAILS : Bi-annual literary magazine; contains a few black-and-white illustrations; 60 pages; approximately 8 1/2" x 11"; printed stiff wraps, stapled with spine covering (binding tape) ; Illustrations by Andrew Mushynsky, John Gorman, and Carl Oak.
