First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition -- signed by Hall of Fame players Bob Pettit, Cliff Hagan, Ed Macauley as well as player Charlie Share and author Greg Marecek -- of this history of the NBA's St. Louis Hawks. The Hawks were a top tiers in the early years of the NBA, led by Hall-of-Famers Pettit, Hagan, and Macauley, The Hawks won the 1958 championship (that's one more than the post-St. Louis Hawks transplanted to Atlanta.) That title run is also notable as the only non-Boston Celtics championship in a 10-year period between 1957-1967. Pettit was the premier player and trade acquisitions Hagan and Macauley rounded out a Big Three at the core of the championship squad. Trade acquisitions? Who did the Hawks fleece for Hagan and Macauley? Er, the Boston Celtics who, in the deal, picked up a lanky center named Bill Russell, the NBA's all-time greatest player, anchor of the nine-in-ten years championship teams, plus two more after a 1967 setback. Charlie Share, while not a Hall of Famer is the answer to a great sports trivia question. He was the first pick overall in the first ever NBA draft in 1950. Unlike other first overalls such as LeBron James, Magic Johnson, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Share balked at donning the uniform of the drafting Celtics and initially played in a rival league for the Waterloo (Iowa) Hawks. He eventually migrated to the NBA's Hawks and had a statistically undistinguished career but held the rank of Team Captain during the 1958 series win over the team he'd snubbed in 1950., Wild guess: Charlie Share wasn't lRed Auerbach's favorite player. Signed by the Hawks illuminaries on the front endpaper along with an inscription to previous owners. 224 pages, illustrated. Includes a four-page program for a 2006 presentation and book signing at the St. Louis County Library. No sign of previous use. Signed by Author(s).
