Add to basketPaperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book follows the historical discovery of the functions of a sense for maintaining bodily equilibrium. Once believed to be solely the domain of the cochlea and auditory processes, a series of experiments throughout the 19th century revealed the existence of a new receptor in the semicircular canals of the inner ear. The author traces this winding path of empirical studies, first detailing the mechanical techniques of inducing disorientation in test subjects and the resulting physiological effects. Scrupulous attention is paid to the gradual isolation of canals as the source of these effects, and to the parallel development of clinical tests for vestibular function. The author also discusses competing theories as they arose, considering the canals as organs for spatial orientation and perception of sound direction, then dismissing these in light of emerging evidence. Their survey concludes that while semicircular canal excitation significantly impacts equilibrium, the canals may not be the sole organs of balance. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
