Il présenta plusieurs mémoires à l'Académie des Sciences. L'un des mémoires les plus important de Grignon : «Mémoire sur les métamorphoses du fer» avait été lu devant l'Académie française en 1761, mais a été publié ici pour la première fois. Il y décrit pour la première fois la structure des cristaux métalliques. C'est dans un autre mémoire, aussi présenté en 1761 et publié ici pour la première fois, «Mémoire sur l'unité du fer» que l'on trouve pour la première fois le terme de "sidérurgie", qui distingue la métallurgie du fer dans le vaste domaine de la métallurgie en général.
