Paperback. Condition: Fair. First Edition, First Printing. Thin octavo. 6.25 x 9.25 in. 54 pp. Fair in original stapled wrappers with creasing and rubbing to covers, internal tape repair to both front and back covers, a split running along the foot of spine and a one inch tear to head of spine crease, some pen marks throughout, including a previous owner signature to front and rear covers, and a gift inscription to verso of front cover. This World War Two era Soviet Union Red Army songbook containing words and music to 15 songs, including "Songs of the Fatherland," "Red Cavalry Song," "Song of the Partisans," and "All For One, One For All" and others. The copy of this book belonged to Mimi and Harold Retskin, concert pianists, and was gifted to them by William S. Gailmor who had ties to The Daily Worker, the Communist newspaper and, notably, was the first American journalist to interview Marshal Josip Tito following the break between Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union. The Retskin's daughter, Leni Sitnick, went on to become the first female mayor of Asheville, NC., and a notable player in the environmental suit against Chemtropics, the Swannanoa weapons plant that polluted the air, soil, and groundwater in and around Oteen and is currently listed as a EPA Superfund. An interested and layered provenance to this scarce first printing.
