Investiga el comportamiento lingüístico, los procesos y mecanismos psíquicos que se dejan…observar en la emisión y recepción de mensajes, esto es, en el eterno vaivén del codificar y el descodificar. Aspira la psicolingüística a un conocimiento no pendiente de la introspección, sino objetivo, empírico, exactamente verificable. Y en buena parte su nutre de pruebas y experimentos con que medir la verdad de los «modelos» teóricos propuestos. No crea el lector, sin embargo, que el presente libro va a traerle en bandeja cuestiones netamente recortadas. Lo problemático, el terreno movedizo en que a veces se asienta una disciplina todavía en sus comienzos, los desparramados esfuerzos de psicólogos y lingüistas se presentarán a su vista con mayor frecuencia. Convenía, ante todo, delimitar el campo propio de la psicolingüística. Gudula List nos da una visión de conjunto acerca de las investigaciones realizadas en los últimos decenios. Justifica plenamente esos trabajos el hecho de que las unidades y categorías a que se refieren fonemas, palabras, oraciones tienen indudable realidad psíquica y se articulan en una firme estructura. Cuestiones fascinantes y complejas son, entre otras, el simbolismo fónico, los campos semánticos, la gramática generativa (objeto de continua atención en estas páginas). Tras el recorrido viene la crítica. List discute métodos y supuestos. En resumen, podemos decir que aboga por criterios inteligentes, comprensivos. Ni empirismo behaviorista a palo seco, ni abstraccionismo desligado de la realidad concreta. Y eso que, con el tiempo, se han ido aproximando los métodos de estudio. Las fórmulas de «estímulo-respuesta» (incluido el refuerzo) se han afinado gracias a las teorías de la mediación psíquica y los procesos ocultos. En la adquisición del lenguaje por el niño parece, pues, necesario conjugar el innatismo de Chomsky con las diarias experiencias del aprendizaje. List quisiera una psicolingüística más atenta a la comunicación social fin primordial de la palabra y en la que el comportamiento lingüístico no quede aislado del resto de la conducta. Hay que resaltar en el lenguaje su creatividad espiritual, sus fases superiores de organización conceptual y de conducta reflexiva y planeada. Todo sea, en fin, por una concepción científica totalizadora. Que el psicolingüista trabaje sobre diálogos vivos y calientes, no sobre frasecitas de laboratorio.
