Dieses als lichtelektrische F…otometrie bekannte Verfahren war die erste objektive Methode für die Helligkeitsbestimmung von Sternen, ferner entwickelte er die Idee einer fotografischen Himmelsüberwachung zur systematischen Suche nach helligkeitsveränderlichen Sternen über einen langen Zeitraum. Dieses Projekt läuft seit 1926 bis heute.
